Change of Direction (COD) Test

Assess ability to decelerate, turn 180 degrees, and re-accelerate (e.g., 5-0-5).

Back to All Features

Overview

The Change of Direction (COD) test, such as the 5-0-5 agility test, measures an athlete's ability to rapidly decelerate, execute a 180-degree turn, and re-accelerate. The Ledsreact Pro times the entire sequence or isolated COD segments. For example, in a 15-5 variation, timing can focus on the 5m out, turn, and 5m back after a 10m approach.

Key Benefits:

Quantify ability to decelerate, turn, and re-accelerate
Assess planting mechanics and re-acceleration
Isolate change of direction speed
Crucial for sports with frequent sharp turns

What it's testing

  • Change of Direction Speed (CODS): Quantifies the complete ability to decelerate, execute a 180-degree turn, and explosively re-accelerate.
  • Deceleration Efficiency: Measures the athlete's capacity to absorb force and brake effectively before the turn, a critical factor in injury prevention and performance.
  • Turn Mechanics & Power: Assesses the efficiency of the plant foot, hip turn, and leg power to initiate a new direction of movement.
  • Re-acceleration: Evaluates the ability to generate speed immediately following the turn.
  • Limb Symmetry: Allows for comparison between left and right turns to identify potential imbalances or weaknesses.

How to setup the COD test

To ensure accurate data collection for the Change of Direction test, follow this setup guide. For a visual walkthrough, please refer to the video guide.

  1. Device Placement: Position the Ledsreact Pro device with the side labeled 'A' pointed directly down the center of the athlete's running lane.
  2. Starting Line: Measure and mark a clear starting line exactly 3 meters from the front of the device. The athlete must start from this line (and not beyond).
  3. Course Layout: Use colored cones to mark the turning point at the desired distance (e.g., 5 meters for a 5-0-5 test). Clearly define the running lane, which is typically 5 meters wide.
  4. Player Mode: This test can be configured for a single player or for two players in multiplayer mode for direct comparison.

Follow the step-by-step instructions in the mobile app to execute the test, which include audio and visual start signals.

Common sports and why

  • Court & Field Sports (Soccer, Basketball, Tennis): Essential for defensive agility, evading opponents, and creating space. For example, a basketball player executing a crossover or a soccer defender shadowing an attacker.
  • Invasion Sports (Rugby, American Football, Hockey): Crucial for open-field tackling, offensive cuts to break through defensive lines, and reacting to turnovers.
  • Net Sports (Volleyball, Badminton): Key for rapid court coverage, transitioning from defense to offense, and positioning for shots.
